In the autumn of 2022, we published a book titled “Docenthief's Exhibition” through crowdfunding. It is a book that introduces 12 works created by Team Cualeunu, all of which were made to be stolen by Docenthief.
We lacked the skills necessary to produce a book. We were inexperienced in every stage—writing, design, photography, creating comics and illustrations, promotion, and distribution. Above all, we weren't even sure what we wanted to convey or why a book was the right medium for it. Yet, the very reason we took the leap was because we were lacking. We believed we had to learn by diving in headfirst. Sharing our journey on Instagram, we created the book with the hope that this project might provide motivation and courage to someone else. There were many regrettable choices, and we even made irreversible mistakes during the printing process. However, because we had the courage to try, we were able to experience the invaluable process of learning from our errors and moving forward.
The name Docenthief is a blend of the words thief and docent.
I remember a moment when we almost gave up, staring at a receipt for 412,104 KRW for just three initial copies. That was when Jinsu said, "If you regret making a book, you're left with the book. But if you regret not making it, you're only left with the regret." I’m certain those were his words. We didn't give up. Thanks to 78 backers, we raised a total of 4,024,000 KRW and were able to publish 200 copies. Thank you for your support and for believing in us.
